Middleton was a strong Parliamentarian camp, although a small group of Royalists survived in the area, using the Ring o' Bells as a secret base. One day, the Royalists were betrayed, and as they escaped through tunnels leading to the nearby church, they were massacred. It is said that he was buried in the cellar, and although many artefacts have turned up, there have been no human remains found. One of the rooms over the cellar is said to be where the Cavaliers plotted against the might of Cromwell's Model Army.
