The West Lothian UFO Encounter is a UFO encounter which led to the Livingston area being dubbed 'the West Lothian twilight zone'.
In 1979, forestry worker Robert Taylor took his dog for a walk in Dechmont Woods. He could not have known what a significant morning it would be. The experience he claims to have had that day still generates debate and discussion within the community to this present day.
On the 9th of November, 1979, after parking his truck near Dechmont Law and entering the woods with his dog, he reported seeing a big "flying dome" hovering above the forest floor. He described it as being made from a dark metallic material with a coarse texture. It also had an outer rim with small propellers. As he approached, without a doubt more than slightly curious, two spheres dropped down from the flying dome.
He says that the spheres started dragging him towards the dome, their protruding spikes hooking onto his trousers, and, after smelling a strong acidic smell, he choked and eventually lost consciousness. When he came round, he was lying face-down on the grass with his dog nearby. The strange objects had disappeared. He found that he couldn't speak, his legs were in pain, and when he returned to his truck, it wouldn't start. He had to walk back to Livingston town. When he returned home, his wife was concerned about his state. He appeared dishevelled, and his clothes were ripped.
The police had been contacted and returned to the scene with him, where they discovered peculiar marks in the soil beneath where the craft was said to have been hovering. They also determined that his clothes had probably been ripped by a sharp, upward pull. They would later record the matter as an assault. Many consider this one of the only examples of an alien sighting becoming subject to a criminal investigation.
Many folks had been sceptical of Taylor's account and believed there was some other reason for what happened that day - with some suggesting a type of epileptic fit and hallucination to be the answer. However, many believed he was a reputable and dependable witness, and he did not seek publicity from his story. Robert Taylor unfortunately passed away in 2007. However, his story will live on long into the future. West Lothian Council even put up an information board at the site to offer additional information to guests.
The Dechmont Woods West Lothian UFO Encounter is Scotland's most renowned alleged UFO incident and has been featured in numerous books and TV programmes. Nothing equivalent is thought to have been witnessed since the West Lothian twilight zone remains the site of probably the most well-known alien encounters in recent times.
